TLC Volunteers Marie Lazinski, MSW, Diane Vasaturo, LCSW and United Way, Lake & Sumter County’s Interim CEO, Keith Barsuhn, at our display table for the Giving Clubs Showcase. We continue to participate in these events and enjoy meeting everyone who stops by our table. It’s a fun event where we get to know people in the community and representatives from other giving clubs. We are all more effective when we know more about each other’s services.

Dr. Jim Deutch Receives Lifetime Achievement Award

The National Association of Social Workers of Florida, Lake and Sumter Unit presented Vietnam War veteran Jim Deutch with a lifetime achievement award for his work as a social worker and during Operation Babylift during the Vietnam War. Christina Cazanave-McCarthy, MSW, Executive Director, NASW Florida, presented the award on March 27, 2025, in The Villages. Those present at the ceremony included Jim’s TLC Services colleagues, friends, and family members.
Here is an excerpt from Christina Cazanave-McCarthy’s speech:
Dr. Deutch, your work has not just shaped policies, it has shaped people. Your vision has not just created programs; it has created possibilities. And your legacy will not just be remembered; it will be continued. To the new generation of social workers: Let this be our call to action. Let us not just recognize leaders like Dr. Deutch—let us learn from them. Let us carry forward his dedication to service, his commitment to justice, and his belief in the power of action. Because that is what social work is about. Tonight, Dr. Deutch, we celebrate not just your career but the lives you’ve touched, the systems you’ve changed, and the inspiration you continue to provide. Your legacy is the foundation upon which future social workers will build. On behalf of all of us, those who have had the privilege of knowing you, learning from you, and being inspired by you, congratulations on this well-deserved Lifetime Achievement Award.
